Lamar volleyball falls 3-1 to SE Louisiana
BEAUMONT – After playing
even through the first two sets on Tuesday night, the Lamar volleyball team dropped
a pair of heartbreakers out of the break to fall 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 24-26,
26-28) to visiting Southeastern Louisiana at McDonald Gym.
Whittaker led the way for the Lady Cardinals with 17 kills, and Wendy Krell hit
.414 with 15. Cortney Moore added 11.
Morford made her return to the court and looked strong, handing out 54 assists
and guiding the offense to a .288 attack percentage.
Megan Schwartz led the team in digs with 22, and Whittaker recorded 10. At the
net, Moore had five blocks and Hobbs picked up four.
first two sets were settled in 25-19 fashion, with each team picking up a
victory. The Lady Lions out-hit the Lady Cards .531 to .303 in the opening
frame, and LU returned the favor in .312 to .088 fashion to win the second.
match took on a different feel out of the break as Lamar battled back from an
early 10-3 deficit to tie things up at 16-16 on back-to-back blocks by the duo
of Moore and Hobbs. There would be six ties down the stretch, including at
24-24, but a Veronica Turk kill and Whittaker error sealed the frame to hand
the Lady Lions a 2-1 advantage.
fourth wound up even closer as SLU was forced to comeback a number of times.
With Lamar leading 20-17, the Lady Lions rattled off five of the next seven
points to bring it even at 22-22. However, following a service error and Moore
kill, it appeared LU would survive the spurt to force a fifth frame.
responded with a pair of blocks and a Courtney Donald kill to grab its first
match point. Moore picked up two kills over the ensuing three points to keep LU
alive, but Tamra Grayson and Donald proved too much, notching consecutive kills
to secure the 28-26 win.
