LU Lady Cards knock off Northwood, 64-19
BEAUMONT, Texas – Chantelle Brockett picked the right time to have a career game for the Lamar Lady Cardinals.
The junior center, playing a college game in front of her parents for the first time, came off the bench to score a career-high 10 points to lead Lamar to a 64-19 victory over Northwood (Texas) in a non-conference women’s basketball game at the Montagne Center on Tuesday.
“It was nice to be able to do it in front of my parents,” said Brockett, who collected her points in just 11 minutes of action. “It’s special for them to be here.”
Lamar (6-2) never trailed as it ran its non-conference winning streak at home to 37 games. The 19 points allowed were the fewest surrendered by the Lady Cardinals since joining the NCAA in the 1982-83 season, and the third fewest overall in the history of the program that dates back to the 1969-70 season.
Still, Lamar coach Larry Tidwell saw aspects that need improvement.
“We need to do a better job in the passing lanes,” Tidwell said. “They had 34 turnovers, but we only had 14 steals. I think we have to do a better job. We could have created a lot more turnovers.”
The Lady Cardinals won handily despite a cold shooting night. Lamar shot just 35.2 percent (25-of-71) from the field, including a 5-of-25 effort (20.0 percent) from 3-point range.
We started out cold and stayed cold,” Tidwell said. “Teams are going to play zone against us. We have to do a better job of knocking down our shots.”
Kalis Loyd led Lamar with 12 points. Shauna Long had nine points and Jasmin Henderson added eight points for Lamar.
Northwood, a first-year program, hung tough with Lamar for a while. The Knights trailed just 19-11 after a LaKeisha Blanson jumper with 5:51 remaining in the half before Lamar went on a 27-0 run over the next 15 minutes to end any suspense.
Blanson led Northwood with 13 points.
Lamar opens a four-game road swing at 6 p.m. Friday at Houston Baptist. That game will be aired live on KLVI (AM 560) and simulcast on www.LamarCardinals.com.
Lamar’s next home game is 5:30 p.m. Jan. 7 when it hosts Southeastern Louisiana in a Southland Conference contest.
