Investigators believe cigarette caused Beaumont house fire

BEAUMONT - Beaumont fire investigators believe a cigarette caused a fire that damaged a home Wednesday morning.

The fire was reported at about 8 a.m. at the home in the 1300 block of Van Buren, east of MLK and south of the Port of Beaumont.

No one was hurt.

When firefighters arrived heavy smoke was coming from the attic near the back of the home.

Captain Brad Penisson said the fire started in a bedroom. He said it appears a cigarette ignited a mattress.

Flames and smoke damaged the mattress, a dresser and other items in the bedroom.

Firefighters quickly put out the flames and contained the fire to the bedroom. Fire, smoke and water damaged other parts of the house.

Penisson said three people live in the home. Two were at home when the fire broke out.

No one was injured.
