KFDM speaks with second local runner, Daniel Villarreal, who competed in Boston Marathon and reacted to explosions

Monday night KFDM News spoke with another runner from Beaumont who competed in the Boston Marathon.

Daniel Villarreal of Beaumont was in his hotel room about three blocks away watching television and winding down after finishing in less than three hours.

He heard sirens and thought it might be first responders helping a runner who was dehydrated. Then he began getting messages on social media from friends asking if he was okay. He flipped channels and saw what had happened.

The runner told us he's competed in 11 marathons. This was his second Boston Marathon. He was a Virginia Tech senior, and off campus, when a gunman killed dozens at the school. Villarreal told us what happened Monday made him think back to Virginia Tech. He told us he could never have imagined some like this would happen at the world's best known marathon.

Villarreal texted friends and told them he was okay. His parents are with him in Boston and they remained together Monday night.
