LifeShare calls for donations following Boston bombings

BEAUMONT - From LifeShare Blood Centers

In light of the tragedy in Boston, the nation’s blood supply has experienced high usage and requires additional donations.  LifeShare Blood Centers is asking the community to give blood so that blood needs are met, both locally and nationally during this critical time.

Blood banks supporting the hospitals local to Boston, Mass. put out a request to other blood centers to aid in replacing the units of blood used in this tragedy, and to help them further prepare for medical needs. Blood centers throughout the U.S. work through resource sharing, particularly during times of disaster, to ensure blood is available for the victims and to replenish the supply.

Blood takes a minimum of 24 hours to be tested and processed before it is available for use. Trauma needs, such as the bombing in Boston, typically use a high volume of O negative blood very quickly. In addition to immediate trauma needs, often victims require more surgeries and blood usage.

“The blood donated locally with LifeShare will be available to help replenish the blood supply in Boston after our local needs are met. Being a community blood center, we must continue to be prepared for the blood requirements for medical needs in our community. This month, the local blood supply has been at a minimal level. In order to support the needs around the Boston area, we need additional blood donors and donations to ensure the local supply doesn’t fall to a critical level,” says Tina Hooper, spokesperson for LifeShare Blood Centers.

LifeShare Blood Centers’ Beaumont location at 4305 Laurel St. is open Monday through Friday from 8:30a.m. to 5p.m. and this Saturday from 8a.m. to noon.
