Texting while driving ban advances in Texas House

By PAUL J. WEBER
Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- The Texas House has preliminary approved a statewide ban on texting while driving, though opposition from Gov. Rick Perry remains.

A divided House Wednesday kept afloat the latest push to make texting behind the wheel illegal. Yet the proposal only narrowly averted being gutted by amendments that would have significantly weakened the ability to enforce a ban.

There is bipartisan resistance in the House to an outright ban on texting while driving. Gov. Rick Perry vetoed a similar measure in 2011 and has already signaled that his stance hasn't changed.

Perry considers a texting ban government micromanagement.

Supporters of a ban point to Texas being one of just 10 states without texting-while-driving laws on the books.

The bill still needs final passage to clear the House.
