Investigators believe inmate committed suicide

JEFFERSON COUNTY - Investigators believe a prisoner at the Jefferson County Jail committed suicide by strangulation.

 

Deputy Rod Carroll says deputies discovered the inmate, Robert William Leviness, 51, unconscious in his cell Friday. Officers and jail staff performed CPR. Justice of the Peace Ransom "Duce" Jones pronounced Leviness dead.

 

Investigators say it appears Leviness died of self-induced manual strangulation.

 

The department is waiting for autopsy results.

 

Beaumont Police had arrested Leviness Friday on a charge of Family Violence.
