Just a few showers and thunderstorms will be possible over the next few days due mainly to daytime heating.  A much better coverage of rain can be expected Thursday into Friday as a cold front moves in from the northwest.  This front will bring us cooler and drier air over the weekend.

Accident cuts phone line to Jasper County Sheriff's Office; emergency calls rerouted

JASPER COUNTY - by Steve W Stewart/KJAS and Rayburn Broadcasting

A dump truck has struck electric and telephone lines on the east side of Jasper, which resulted in a brief power outage. However, a fiber optic telephone line was severed, which has knocked out telephone service at the Jasper County Sheriff's Department.

The incident occurred shortly after 10:00 Tuesday morning, on East Milam Street near the Sheriff's Department headquarters.

Communications Director Laura Moore says that all 911 calls in Jasper County have been rerouted through the Tyler County Sheriff's Department in Woodville. Moore says if you dial 911, a Tyler County Sheriff's Department dispatcher will receive the call, and then forward the call directly to her cell phone, or the cell phone of Sheriff Mitchel Newman.

Moore said she is requesting that people refrain from calling 911 unless you have a true emergency situation, where life or property are in danger.

If you have a non-emergency situation, but you need to speak to someone immediately, Moore said you can call her cell phone, which is 409-658-9680, or Sheriff Mitchel Newman's cell phone, which is 409-383-3522.
