PAISD board approves contract for interim superintendent
By Nicole Murray, KFDM News The Port Arthur school board voted last night to buy out the rest of superintendent Dr. Johnny Brown's contract.
The board also approved a contract for interim superintendent Dr. Mark Porterie.
Dr. Brown's contract wasn't set to expire until next year but last month both district officials and Dr. Brown stated his departure was best for the district.
During last night's meeting the board approved a voluntary separation package to buy out Dr. Brown's contract for $255,000.
The board also approved an interim superintendent contract for Dr. Mark Porterie. He has served as the deputy superintendent for the district for several years.
Dr. Porterie says he is excited for the opportunity and has key issue he wants to address for the upcoming school year.
Dr. Porterie stated: "I want to ensure all of our students are successful. I will be working with teachers to make sure we have a strong curriculum that follows the new guidelines the state has set for graduation requirements."
He went on to say: "I would also like to see more of our parents and community members get involved in helping us reach our goals."
Dr. Porterie said the district needs to improve reading skills and he wants to incorporate more programs that target younger students pre-k through second grade.
Porterie also plans to crackdown on disciplinary issues that have plagued the district.
