Toddler killed in collision that critically injured mother
JEFFERSON COUNTY - The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a collision on Highway 90 in China that killed a 22-month-old boy and seriously injured the child's mother.
State troopers say the driver of a 2001 Ford pickup was traveling north on Orange Street in China at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The driver failed to yield the right of way to eastbound traffic on Highway 90, according to the DPS, and the driver of a 2009 Kenworth truck tractor semi-trailer struck the pickup.
The driver of the Ford truck, Annabel Topete, 31, of China, was taken by ambulance to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth and was in ICU. The driver of the truck tractor, Charles Patterson, 44, of Orange, was taken to Baptist Beaumont Hospital and was listed in stable condition.
The 22-month-old child passenger in the Ford truck was pronounced dead at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth by Justice of the Peace Ray Chesson. Topete wasn't restrained by a seat belt, according to the DPS, and the child was in a car seat but it wasn't restrained by a 5 point harness. Patterson was wearing a seat belt.
The investigating trooper doesn't suspect that alcohol was a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
