PORT NECHES - From Chief Paul Lemoine/Port Neches Police Department

On Tuesday June 4th, 2013 Port Neches Police officers were dispatched to the 2000 blk of Merriman in reference to a major traffic accident. Just prior to the accident officers were alerted by a Port Neches PD secretary that she had witnessed a black SUV strike a "No Parking" sign in the front police station parking lot on Merriman, drag the sign and leave the scene west on Merriman. When officers arrived at the accident scene in the 2000 blk of Merriman they observed that two vehicles were involved, a 2011 maroon Toyota Corolla 4-dr and a 2008 blk Dodge Nitro SUV. Investigators determined through witness statements and evidence at the scene that the black Dodge SUV was travelling west in the 2000 blk of Merriman and the maroon Toyota was exiting the parking lot of the Hebert Public Library turning east in the 2000 blk of Merriman. The black Dodge SUV crossed the centerline of Merriman and struck the maroon Toyota head on. After striking the Toyota the Dodge SUV continued west on Merriman, left the roadway on the north side of Merriman and travelled through the grass next to the Port Neches Middle school before coming to a stop after striking the brick "Port Neches Middle School" sign. The three victims from the Toyota, 52 yoa female driver, 4 ½ yoa passenger and a 2 yoa passenger were transported to Christus St. Elizabeth hospital. The 2yoa victim was later transported to Texas Children’s hospital in Houston. The driver of the black Dodge SUV, 38yoa female, was transported to the Medical Center of Southeast Texas for treatment. Investigators believe that the 38yoa driver of the blk Dodge Nitro was impaired and charges are pending further investigation.
