Hardin County woman pleads guilty to manslaughter and is sentenced
Accused of texting while driving while traveling at a high rate of speed and killing a man during a traffic accident, Ratoshia Leigh Baird of Silsbee pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Judge Layne Walker's courtroom and was sentenced to 10 years probation and six months of jail time.
The court was unable to prove without a reasonable doubt that Baird was texting while driving.
Currently pregnant, Baird will start serving her probation until she has her baby and will then begin serving her jail time.
Police said Baird lost control of her jeep in the south bound lanes of the Eastex Freeway in Beaumont on December 28, 2012.
Her jeep struck two other vehicles, became airborne, went over the cable barrier that divides the north and south bound lanes, and struck a 36-year-old Warren man's pick up truck head on between Lucas and Delaware, according to police.
Johnny Langton died at the scene and Baird and another man suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
