The second of two suspects accused of shooting and killing a Liberty County man has surrendered to authorities. According to Jasper County Sheriff's Department Captain Bob Walker, 33-year-old Gary Rene Smith, Jr., of Silsbee, turned himself in at the Jasper County Jail shortly after 6:00 on Monday evening.
Smith, along with 22-year-old Jeffery Shane Reed, of Jasper, are accused of the shooting death of 29-year-old Jacob Thomas Auberry, of Dayton. The incident occurred on Thursday, August 8th on Hi Truitt Road, just north of the Jasper city limits.
Reed has been charged with murder, with bond set at $1 million, and bond denied on a separate charge of parole violation. It's expected that Smith will also be charged with murder.
Reed turned himself in one day after the shooting, however, Smith refused to surrender until Monday.
Officers almost captured Smith on Sunday, August 11th after he was spotted at a house on Steer Stadium Road, just east of Jasper. However, Smith managed to escape.
