Jasper man died in fiery crash
SABINE COUNTY - Sabine County Sheriff Tom Maddox says the Texas Department of Public Safety has identified a person who died in a fiery one vehicle accident on Friday morning near Lowes Creek Park. According to DPS, it occurred at about 3:00 a.m. on Highway 83, two miles west of Hemphill.
A report filed by Trooper Brent Murray said A 2001 Jeep Cherokee was traveling westbound, when the driver went off the road, and then went back across the eastbound lanes and crashed into trees next to the highway.
The Toledo Chronicle is reporting that several people tried to get the trapped driver out; however, the vehicle caught on fire and was completely engulfed by the time firefighters arrived. The story also said a nearby homeowner tried, in vain, to use his water hose, but the flames overtook the vehicle.
Hemphill and Pendleton Harbor firefighters used the Jaws-of-Life to remove the person's body from the vehicle.
Sheriff Maddox said that the deceased had been identified as 39 year old Clifford Woods of Jasper.
