House fire kills 86-year-old man in Batson

BATSON - by Scott Lawrence

First responders have found the body of an 86-year-old man they say apparently tried to escape a house fire and died near the front door of his home.

Watch KFDM and stay with kfdm.com for updates.

Hardin County Sheriff Ed Cain tells KFDM News Jack Hanks, 86, died in the house fire Tuesday morning at his home on Gusher Road in Batson.

Investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen, according to Sheriff Cain. He says someone called 911 to report the fire shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday. First responders discovered Hanks' body at the front door of his home. Cain says it appears Hanks was trying to escape the flames.

He suffered burns. A justice of the peace has ordered an autopsy.

Sheriff Cain says first responders believe Hanks lived alone in the home.
