Second annual cops and kids carnival on the horizon

The second annual Cops and Kids is scheduled to kick off Saturday with the Beaumont Police Officer Association "Run to Remember" benefit 5K.

Registration starts at 6 a.m. at the Downtown Event Centre in the 700 block of Crockett Street.

The 5K, which has a course that winds through downtown Beaumont, starts at 7 a.m. and a one mile competitive run will start at 8:10 a.m. followed by a 12 years old and under children's fun run with officers.

After the awards ceremony for the Beaumont Police Officer Association "Run to Remember", the opening ceremony for the carnival will begin.

The opening ceremony will start at 10 a.m. on the lawn of the Downtown Event Centre and during the ceremony there will be a presentation of colors by the Officer Conrad Gernale Memorial Scout Troop 194 and Beaumont Lt. Brian Skinner's daughters will sing the national anthem. Following an invocation, Chief Jimmy Singletary will welcome everyone to the carnival.

Participants will be able to find rides, free hot dogs, drinks, pop corn, and various types of carnival entertainment.

Police equipment, such as police cars, SWAT armored vehicles, and a SWAT Zodiac boat, will be on display and "McGruff the Crime Dog" will visit with actual K-9 dogs.
