Mayor expects Jasper council to select new police chief Friday

JASPER - by Scott Lawrence

KFDM News has learned the Jasper City Council is calling a special meeting for Friday morning with the goal of hiring a new police chief.

Council fired Rodney Pearson in June of last year. He was the town's first black police chief. Some members of council criticized his job performance.

The job has remained open since council fired Pearson.

More than 40 people applied for the job through a company that screened the applicants for Jasper.

Jasper Mayor Mike Lout tells KFDM News the list is down to two.

Lout says council has called a special meeting for 9 a.m. Friday and he expects the city to name a new police chief to replace Pearson.
