Former Beaumont police officer conviction thrown out

KFDM News - An appeals court has upheld a judge's decision to throw out the conviction of a former Beaumont police officer.

The Ninth Court of Appeals released its ruling today in the case of Eric Heilman.

The former Beaumont officer faced charges of tampering with a government document.

Judge Lupe Flores ruled the state waited too long to prosecute Heilman, and another former officer -- Brad Beaulieu.

An attorney for Heilman tells KFDM News his client wants to return to law enforcement.

Heilman's mother, Anita, told said she was "beyond relieved and very, very thankful Judge Flores had the courage and integrity to stand on the side of justice."

Defense attorneys believe the ruling will have the same impact on Brad Beaulieu, who also has an appeal pending.

We're told Beaulieu also wants to return to law enforcement.
