Port Arthur hosts night out against crime

Port Arthur police asked families to learn for themselves how to fight crime and the city is hosted its night out against crime.

The department showcased equipment including its armored personnel carrier, but officers said the key to fighting crime is a partnership with the public.

When I was a kid and my momma says a policeman, I'll go hide. I wasn't bad, but that's what it was, said Salvador Grado.

He said times are changing and now its important for kids to interact with police officers.

Today, you want your kids to come up and be one on one with an officer, and that's what I believe in, he said.

He also stressed the importance of adults joining neighborhood watch groups, acting as the first defense against crime.

Wherever you live in Port Arthur, there is a neighborhood watch group, he said, and if there s not one, you can start one.
