Getz files motion that Judge's cancellation of BISD election is illegal
BEAUMONT - Voters won't get a chance to make choices next month in who has a seat on the Beaumont school board.
Early voting began Monday-the same day Judge Donald Floyd canceled the November 5 election.
The school board met early Monday morning and decided to ask Judge Floyd to cancel the vote. He agreed late Monday afternoon.
The board's request came after an appeals court ruled the election would be illegal because it wasn't a joint election with the city, county or state.
The court also ruled the district must use a voting map including five single-member districts and two at-large seats.
But trustees voted Monday against hiring an expert to draw a new election map.
It's not clear when the election will take place.
Late Monday attorney Michael Getz filed a motion indicated he believes it was illegal for Judge Floyd to cancel the election.
