Houston area driver shot and killed; crashes into utility pole

Residents in the Highlands community told deputies they heard several gunshots shortly before a pickup truck crashed into a utility pole.

Deputies in far northeast Harris County arrived to find the driver dead.

The shooting happened around 10 p.m. Monday as the pickup driver traveled on N. Main near Fig Orchard Road. Witnesses said they heard three or four shots before the truck hit a utility pole and knocked out power to nearby homes.

Residents said they heard a vehicle speed from the scene, but nobody got a look at the shooter.

We really dont know what happened, said Sgt. Robert Spurgeon with the Harris County Sheriffs Office. Its still early in the investigation, and were just now able to get the vehicle out of the ditch.

Deputies said a motive for the shooting wasnt clear.

The victims identity was not released.

As of 7 a.m. Tuesday, repairs to the utility pole were still underway.
