TEA sends preliminary report on Special Education program to BISD
BEAUMONT - The Texas Education Agency has sent the Beaumont school district a preliminary report of the TEA investigation into the district's Special Education Program, one part of the broader investigation which is ongoing, according to information TEA spokeswoman DeEtta Culbertson provided to KFDM News.
Culbertson wouldn't comment on the specifics of the preliminary report but told us the district has 10 days to respond to the findings and recommendations. It can also accept the report as is. She says if it's an extremely detailed response the TEA will grant the district more time. The TEA will take into consideration the response before issuing a final report. She told us there's no timetable for issuing the final report. The TEA will make public the final report.
She says the TEA emailed the preliminary report last Friday to the Superintendent, Dr. Timothy Chargois, and also mailed a paper copy to the district.
Culbertson wouldn't comment on the specifics but said, in general, such reports contain findings and recommendations. Last year the TEA sent a number of investigators to the district and announced it was conducting an investigation into several areas within BISD, including student attendance, exam security, district contracts, special education and overall district governance. The visit was in response to complaints and other information.
Board member Tom Neild told KFDM News the district didn't share the preliminary report with trustees. "Anything negative that comes in, they're going to keep it concealed," said Neild.
