Bolivar Ferry running again
GALVESTON - by KHOU 11 News and www.khou.com
The Bolivar Ferry is back in business after being suspended Saturday by a massive oil spill in the Houston Ship Channel.
The service to and from Galveston will be limited to daytime operations between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. for now. The ferry normally runs 24 hours a day.
About 9,400 passengers and 3,000 vehicles use the free ferry between Galveston and Bolivar on a typical Monday, according to TxDOT.
Those who work on Bolivar but live in Galveston, including teachers, were forced to take the two-hour drive around the ship channel Monday morning.
Travelers should be aware that oily conditions may still exist and are encouraged to exercise caution and pay attention to TxDOT personnels instructions while boarding, disembarking and riding on the ferry.
TxDOT also offered these tips for ferry passengers:
Passengers should avoid the bow of the vessel where water spray is highest. Plan additional travel time because vessels will likely be traveling with reduced capacity and at slight slower speedsBe mindful that ground surfaces maybe slippery.
The public can contact the Ferry Office for status updates at (409) 795-2230.
