KJAS: Fire destroys home on north side of town
by Mike Lout/KJAS and Rayburn Broadcasting
Fire broke out in the early morning hours of Friday, completely destroying the home of Hughey Whitton in the 2500 block of Wheeler Street on the north side of Jasper.
Firemen were called to the location, directly across from Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home, shortly before 6:00 when neighbors reported that flames were coming from the rear of the home and arrived to find the structure completely engulfed in flames.
Whitton was reportedly out of town when the fire occurred. However, his wife and three other family members were there when the fire broke out and a dog and young girl are being credited with alerting them and no injuries resulted from the incident.
Workers from Jasper Exxon Towing & Recovery were able to pull two vehicles away from the burning wood frame structure and saved them from the flames.
