Bond set for men arrested on possession of controlled substance charges

Two men were arraigned Thursday morning after being arrested Wednesday and being charged with possession of a controlled substance.

One of the men, Desmond Spears, was also charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon, class A misdemeanor, and the other, Darrell Powell, was charged with felon in possession of a firearm, a third degree felony, according to authorities. 

Spears had bond amounts totaling $42,000 and Powell had bond amounts totaling $60,000.

A detective with the Orange County Special Services Division was traveling west on the I-10 service road near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive on Wednesday, when he saw a Chevrolet Avalanche that was traveling in the same direction swerve, causing the vehicle to fail to maintain a single lane of travel, according to a news release.

The detective stopped the vehicle for the traffic violation and made contact with the driver and passenger.

A search of the vehicle revealed an amount of a liquid substance contained in two separate baby bottles hidden within the center console which the detective believed to be about twelve ounces of codeine, according to the the release.

The detective also found a 9 mm semiautomatic firearm located in plain view.

Both the driver, Spears, and the passenger, Powell, remain in custody at the Orange County Jail.
