Do you know how to spot counterfeit money? Beaumont police want to educate the public on how to spot fake money to help deter brazen counterfeiters in Southeast Texas.
Learning how to identify counterfeit bills can help put counterfeiters out of business. Beaumont Police Detective , Joe Reyes says, The three easiest ones to spot that you dont need any special equipment to spot are the security thread, the water mark and the color shifting ink.
Reyes says over the last six months counterfeiters have been passing a lot of bills at area businesses and even last weekend at the South Texas State Fair. We know some of its being printed right here in Beaumont. We also think some is being brought in from Houston and other cities, Reyes says.
The security thread has the denomination of the bill in numbers and words and can be seen by holding the bill up to the light.
Franklins face should be seen in the watermark, says Reyes.
Theres no image on the counterfeit bill. Sams Package Store David Fertitta adds, and the Liberty Bell will change colors. But, not on a counterfeit bill. Fertitta says hes serious about spotting fake bills, for a good reason. When you take money to the bank and its counterfeit. Youre out that money. Youve lost that money because the banks going to confiscate it, Fertitta states.
But, he has a way to handle it. Fertitta says, At the register, well say, Were not comfortable with that bill. If its obvious, youll try to keep them here and call police. Thats hard to do cause the customer knows youre on to them and they dont want to stay around. And they wont want to print or pass anymore fake bills if businesses and individuals are watching them.
