Black Panthers rally in opposition to Alfred Wright death investigation

JASPER - The Black Panthers are rallying in Jasper Monday afternoon in support of Alfred Wright's family and to protest the investigation into his death. Wright's father spoke to the group.

KFDM reporter Haley Bull is covering the rally. Watch KFDM and stay with for updates.

The group is rallying at the Department of Public Safety Office in Jasper. A DPS spokeswoman told KFDM the agency closed its office for the day due to safety reasons. At one point, some of the demonstrators tried to crowd inside the office.

Wright went missing in November 2013 in Hemphill. The Sabine County Sheriff's Office organized a search that involved a number of officers from various law enforcement agencies as well as volunteers. The organized search was called off after several days. Family members continued looking and it was through that search Wright's body was discovered several weeks later.

An autopsy ordered by Sabine County determined Wright's death was accidental and due to an overdose of several drugs, including cocaine and methamphetamine.  Wright's family and others have taken issue with the autopsy and the investigation. They believe Wright was murdered.

The Sabine County Sheriff's Office asked the Texas Rangers to help investigate. The Justice Department is also looking into the case.
