Superintendent inviting public to 'Let's Talk' forum Monday night
BEAUMONT - The Beaumont school superintendent is inviting the public to a "Let's Talk" community forum Monday night.
The forum begins at 7 p.m. in the boardroom, 3955 Harrison Street.
The forum comes after the Texas Commissioner of Education, Michael Williams, visited Beaumont last Thursday and met with the BISD Superintendent, Dr. Timothy Chargois, and board members. Williams wanted feedback on the TEA staff recommendation that the state take over the district and replace the trustees with a board of managers. Williams hasn't made a decision.
F.B.I. agents Friday raided the homes of BISD Purchasing Director Naomi Lawrence-Lee and former West Brook booster club president William Bo Kelley, Jr.
"There is a law enforcement action taking place Friday linked to the BISD investigation," Davilyn Walston, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office told KFDM News. She wouldn't specify the target but KFDM has learned the actions are taking place at Lee's home and Kelley's home.
KFDM reporter Justin Hinton reports that Lee was in her home during the raid and an agent inside the home answered the door when we knocked and told us she was cooperating but he wouldn't let her speak with us.
The superintendent placed Lee on paid administrative leave in January pending the outcome of an internal investigation. A KFDM investigation uncovered questions about the amount of money Lee received in extra-duty pay but we don't know if that has anything to do with Friday's raid.
Kelley was removed as West Brook booster club president in February while the club investigated what it said was about $30,000 that was unaccounted for. We reported that Kelley gave the club a check for about that amount shortly after he was removed.
