BISD board of managers considering what to cut

BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News

After a three hour budget workshop Tuesday, the Board of Managers for the Beaumont school district is getting closer to adopting a budget for the 2014-2015 school year with a focus on drafting one that is realistic.

"We've set transportation at four or five million and it comes in at seven year after year. Do we set it up next year? No, we reduce it," said Bill Lenhart a consultant for the district.

The group listened as Lenhart explained how departments in the past created budgets.

He said they underestimated what the department needed at the beginning of the year and would go over budget by the time the year ended.

Lenhart also said no one was held responsible.

Superintendent Vern Butler, said he would be responsible moving forward.

"We have to look at our employees and hold them responsible. And if they're not doing the job then we have to evaluate that and we have to work with them. And if we don't have the result, then we're going to have to make other decisions," said Butler.

"We're not going to tolerate managers who are not very careful about spending their budgets, not going over their budgets, staying within their budgets, so I was very proud of our superintendent for taking responsibility for that himself," said Dr. Jimmy Simmons, president of the Board of Managers.

The managers will adopt a budget before the end of the month but are also focused on academics.

"I am as concerned about improving the academics which we will do, as I am about the financial concern of the district," said Simmons.
