Lady Cards fall in SLC Semifinals
KATY, Texas Kalis Loyd tied the Lamar University womens basketball record for games played on Friday. Lamar coach Larry Tidwell hopes Loyd gets a chance to break it.
Loyds 126th game as a Lady Cardinal didnt have a storybook finish as third-seeded Lamar (21-10) dropped a 67-61 decision to No. 2 Sam Houston State (18-13) in the Southland Conference semifinals.
Im hoping that were not through, Tidwell said. I know we are not going to the NCAA Tournament, but I hope we can go to the Womens Basketball Invitational. Were a good team. Weve won 21 games. We deserve to keep playing.
Things didnt go Lamars way on Friday as Sam Houston State scored the first five points of the game and never relinquished the lead. The Lady Bearkats Angela Beadle, who had just two points in each of the two regular-season games against Lamar, led all scorers on Friday with 19 points, going 8-of-11 from the field and 3-of-3 from the line.
Give her credit, Tidwell said of Beadle. She had a tremendous game.
Lamar, which trailed 35-29 at halftime, stayed within striking distance for most of the second half. Lamar got to within five points after Loyd made a pair of free throws to make it 56-51 with 5:36 left, but Sam Houston State scored the next four points to increase its margin to nine.
A Dominique Edwards layup with 19 seconds remaining pulled Lamar to within four points at 65-61 before Chanice Smith hit two free throws to give Sam Houston a 67-61 lead with 14 seconds left. The Bearkats were able to run out the clock after Lamars Shauna Long missed a 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining.
Im very proud of this team, they gave it all they had, Tidwell said. I couldnt ask for any more from them.
Edwards had 16 points and seven rebounds for Lamar, while Loyd, who tied Trashanna Smith for the all-time games record, had 13 points and seven rebounds.
Kalis was hurting today, Tidwell said of his star player, who turned an ankle in Thursdays win over Stephen F. Austin. She couldnt get the elevation on her shots like she usually does. But shes a warrior.
Loyds 13 points increased her school-record total to 1,965 points, well ahead of Uirannah Jacksons former mark of 1,730 points. Loyd, a three-time first-team All-Southland Conference selection, is fifth on Lamars all-time rebounding list with 840, third in assists with 370 and second in steals with 280. Hers is the only name that appears on the top-10 lists in all four categories at Lamar.
Im hoping I get to play again as a Lady Cardinal, Loyd said. Being a Lady Cardinal is special, and I dont want it to end.
Senior Carenn Baylor and junior Gia Ayers added nine points apiece for Lamar.
Sequeena Thomas had 14 points and 17 rebounds for Sam Houston State. Jasmine Johnson had 12 points for the winners
Sam Houston State faces top-seeded Oral Roberts for the conference title at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Tidwell is hopeful hell know of the Lady Cardinals postseason fate by Monday.
I love this team. he said. Its a great group of young ladies.
A group that Loyd and Tidwell hope can together for a few more games.
