Rice too much for Lamar volleyball team
BEAUMONT Cortney Moore put up nine kills and three blocks, but unfortunately for the Lamar volleyball team, it wasnt enough as the Lady Cardinals fell to visiting Rice 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-17) at McDonald Gym.
Moore was joined in the attack by Nicole Parish with six kills, and both Madi Martin and Cedar Young added four apiece. Setting duties were split between the freshmen duo of Alexa Johnson and Ashley Ellis, which combined for 25 assists. However, the attack didnt prove efficient enough as the Owls out-hit LU .226 to .031.
Defensively, Megan Schwartz led the team with 11 digs, and Erika Rojas added seven. Parish recorded six to go along with a pair of blocks. Martin and Sara Landis also made some plays at the net, putting up two block assists each, but as a team, the Lady Cards were out-blocked 9 to 5.
After surrendering the first two sets, LUs best opportunity for a win came in the third as the Red and White came back from five points down to take a 12-10 lead, thanks in part to Rojas holding serve over the course of a seven-point run. Rice would answer just a few minutes later with a 7-0 run of its own to take control at 19-15, going on to secure a 25-17 victory.
Lamar will return to action on Friday with the Southland Conference opener in Huntsville against Sam Houston State. On Saturday, LU is scheduled to play both Washington State and Jackson State in Huntsville as a part of the SHSU Invitational.
