KFDM reporter Kaily Cunningham joined us live from Highway 87 in Galveston County, where the government officials says people should be prepared to stay put, or leave the peninsula as soon as possible.

Voluntary evacuations are underway on Bolivar Peninsula this afternoon.

KFDM reporter Kaily Cunningham joined us live from Highway 87 in Galveston County, where the government officials say people should be prepared to stay put, or leave the peninsula as soon as possible.

The road is already covered with water and debris. Crews have been allowing cars to go in and out of the peninsula as of this morning and early afternoon.

We spoke with a constable who said emergency officials are waiting to hear from the Texas Department of Transportation on whether to keep the road open, or perhaps when they might close it.

The eye of the storm is still expected to hit land Thursday around 7 a.m.
