HARRIS COUNTY, Texas - by KHOU and www.khou.com - Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies attempting to serve a warrant Wednesday night ended up fatally shooting a suspect they said was hiding in a closet.
It happened around 9 p.m. at a home in the 17000-block of Analisa Circle in northwest Harris County.
Deputies said they were trying to serve a warrant for aggravated assault on Gerritt Perkins, 37. The man’s girlfriend allowed them to enter the home, and a search for the suspect followed.
The deputies spotted Perkins in a closet, but they said he refused to come out. They then said they spotted something shiny before Perkins made a sudden movement, and that’s when one of the deputies opened fire.
The suspect was sent to the hospital where he later died. Investigators later determined he was unarmed.
According to neighbors, the suspect had a history of violence and a judge previously ordered him to stay away from the house where he found.
Deputies said Perkins’ warrant was for a probation violation that happened in September. A judge ordered his arrest after it was discovered he was back at his girlfriend’s home.
As is sheriff’s office policy, the deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on paid leave during the investigation. He’s been on the force for 10 years, according to the sheriff’s office.
