BEAUMONT - By Megan Dillard - Should BISD try to go after some of the money the government seized as a result of the Calvin Walker case?
The majority of the board said no.
The 4-2 vote was a decision that came late in the meeting, but there was no lack of discussion around the agenda item.
Six of the seven board members were present at tonight's meeting.
Mike Neil and Tom Neild voted in favor of moving forward in seeking the funds.
Terry Williams, Gwen Ambres, Zenobia Bush, and board president Woodrow Reese voted against going after the seized money.
Calvin Walker, the district's electrical contractor, was accused of overbilling the district by millions of dollars.
Walker denied the charges and his trial ended in a hung jury.
In July, Walker signed a plea agreement to not filing his taxes in a timely manner, which included money the district gave Walker.
Walker gave up $3 million as part of his plea agreement.
The district now has the option of going after that money.
One board member called the continued discussions a "waste of the board's time."
Another board member said it’s the duty of each member to "publically state why they wouldn't try to go after those dollars."
Board member Mike Neil said, "It's very clear we're victims."
Board president Woodrow Reese told Neil his statement was "appalling."
He also challenged Neil if a court of law didn't find Walker guilty, "Who in the world do you think you are?"
There was also tension between some members of the board and people in the audience.
At one point, Woodrow Reese referred to an audience member as a word that some might find an offensive version of the term smart aleck.
