HARDIN COUNTY - By Megan Dillard - A Hardin County man is dead after he stabbed a deputy Wednesday night.
Sheriff Ed Cain told KFDM Deputy Jason Griffin is in stable condition after the attack.
KFDM spoke with neighbors who described warning signs from the suspect.
Shelly Alcorn lives on Haynes Lane in Hardin County.
Late Wednesday night her street was filled with deputies and flashing lights.
She knows her neighbors well, including Phillip Haynes.
"There's been a few times I've been down there and come right out and say that he'll kill somebody if they come down there messing with him."
Sheriff Ed Cain says deputies got a call shortly after nine Wednesday that Haynes may have been suicidal.
When two deputies got to his house they say Haynes appeared unconscious in bed.
"Once they got into the bedroom and were trying to wake the subject up, he got up with a knife and charged the deputies."
Haynes stabbed Deputy Jason Griffin in the arm.
Deputy Scott Delacerda shot Haynes twice. Haynes died at Christus Hospital Saint Elizabeth.
"It's hard any time a violent act takes place with anyone else or our deputies, and certainly when a deputy is injured like one of our deputies was, a serious cut. When you have another deputy that has to use force on someone, it's always hard."
A situation Sheriff Cain says is not easy but one that was handled properly.
"They did what they had to do. They followed their training. They followed policy and procedure, and they did what they needed to do tonight."
Alcorn says this event will affect everyone in the community.
"They come to your rescue when you need them, and Griffin is one of them. He's not just an officer; he's a friend. There's several of them up there like that, and we just love them."
Again, Deputy Jason Griffin is in stable condition at Christus Hospital Saint Elizabeth.
The deputy who fired the shots, Scott Delacerda, is not scheduled to work for the next four days.
Sheriff Ed Cain said after that, the sheriff's office will determine whether that deputy will take a leave of absence.
Sheriff Cain also said the Texas Rangers are investigating.
Stay with KFDM. Reporter Megan Dillard will have more on this story tonight at six.
