JEFFERSON COUNTY - by Scott Lawrence - The votes are counted but the Jefferson County Clerk's Office may not be ready to sign off just yet on the race for Tax Assessor-Collector.
Incumbent Shane Howard, a Republican, received 23 more votes than challenger Thomas Sigee, a Democrat.
Nearly 35,000 people voted the straight ticket for the Democratic Party, boosting Sigee's numbers.
County Clerk Carolyn Guidry told KFDM News there are 599 uncounted provisional ballots in the race. The ballot board will decide how many of the voters were properly registered.
There are also more than 100 overseas military ballots that can be counted if they're returned by this coming Tuesday.
All of that might factor into the outcome.
Commissioners are scheduled to canvass the votes at Tuesday's meeting.
Guidry told us either candidate can request a recount by 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 15.
The recount can be done by hand or automatically. A candidate asking for the recount must pay a deposit based on the number of precincts and type of recount.
Guidry says the race is the closest she can remember in the county.
