PORT ARTHUR - by Scott Lawrence - The Port Arthur school board will hold a special closed meeting this week to hear from an outside attorney hired by the district to investigate a complaint against the superintendent, but the board won't take action during the meeting, according to information provided to KFDM News by PAISD attorney Melody Chappell.
Dr. Johnny Brown hasn't been at work since October 25. Neither Chappell nor others associated with the district will publicly comment on the reason for his absence.
Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mark Porterie has been handling Dr. Brown's duties.
The agenda for the special called closed board meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 27 indicates it's for the purpose of consultation with attorney regarding complaint against the Superintendent of Schools.
The agenda indicates the board will deliberate the performance, evaluation and job duties of the Superintendent of Schools.
Chappell told KFDM News on Monday that the board will hear from an outside attorney hired by the district, but she says the board won't take any action during the meeting.
After the last school board meeting, attorney Melody Chappell told KFDM News, "I think everything's running smoothly. Dr. Porterie has been with the school district for a long time. He's the current deputy superintendent. I think he's doing a good job stepping into Dr. Brown's shoes. Of course, we're all missing Dr. Brown, but I think Dr. Porterie is holding it together pretty nicely."
Chappell said Dr. Brown is available for the district and the board during his absence.
He is getting paid while he is out and the attorney said there are no signs that his contract is affected.
She says the district hopes to resolve the matter soon.
