Community honors Bill Leger at memorial mass
BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
Hundreds of people gathered at Saint Jude Catholic Church in Beaumont to honor Bill Leger who died in a traffic accident last Saturday near Lafayette, Louisiana.
The memorial mass brought together friends and family from across Texas and Louisiana including his parents, colleagues and friends.
“He was the love of my life and we were together 33 years, and my family will miss him” his wife Tecoo Leger said. “But our faith in God is very strong and we will make sure that his memory lives on forever.”
Many of the guests transitioned to the parish hall after the mass to share food and memories of Bill.
“Bill is like a brother to me,” KBMT Anchor and a former co-worker at KFDM Jackie Simien said. “I mean I love this man, and he was as wonderful as everybody thought he was. That’s the great thing about him.”
Bill’s aunt Sue Fontenot said, “There is a hole in my heart and in our family that can’t be healed. It can’t be filled. I miss him and will miss him, but I thank God for the gift of Bill.”
Country musician and friend, Tracy Byrd, recounted a text message Bill sent two days before he died, praising the entertainer for a song he heard for the first time.
“That’s the kind of thing where you just sit back,” Byrd said. “One of those ‘Aha!’ moments where you go, ‘Did God make that happen?’ It’s special.”
Byrd also sang Amazing Grace during the mass.
