HOUSTON - By KHOU 11 News and www.khou.com
A driver who led officers on a chase died when his pickup truck slammed into a northeast Houston home, narrowly missing a sleeping woman, police said early Thursday.
According to the Houston Police Department, the suspect left a bar on Irvington near Crosstimbers just before 2 a.m. The suspect allegedly almost ran another car off the road and didn’t pull over for police when they tried to stop him.
Police said the suspect sped up and led them on a five-minute chase, which only came to an end after his speeding truck left the E. Hardy frontage road and slammed into a home.
The crash stopped just inches from the bed of a sleeping 62-year-old grandmother, police said.
“She was on her bed sleeping, and she didn’t even know what was going on until she heard the bang,” said family member Irma Lira. “Also, she didn’t know how to get out because the bedroom door was blocked – couldn’t get out – was actually on the floor. My son was the one who was screaming her name, and he was the one that went around the house through the outside to try and get her out.”
The woman’s family said she crawled out with just minor cuts.
“I’m lucky to have my mother right now,” said Lira. “Looking at that bedroom, we’re lucky she’s alive.”
Inside the home were four other people, ages 8, 14, 22, and 54. All were sleeping at the time of the crash and were not injured.
The driver of the pickup wasn’t so lucky -- police said he died at the scene.
Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the incident, but they said the investigation was ongoing.
Police said the crash also hit a gas line, which had to be shut off.
