He will share his story with families of 2 Bryan firefighters who were injured in a fire that killed two of their co-workers.
Suiting up in bunker gear and rushing to burning buildings is second nature to Cody Schroeder.
“When you go to fight fire are you scared? No you don't think about things like that,” said Cody Schroeder.
The goal for Schroeder and every firefighter is to get ready in seconds and be ready to roll out.
December 17th, 2007, chroeder was the first firefighter on the scene of what they call a burner.
A home off MLK parkway was on fire.
Schroeder and several co-workers were inside when there was a flashover... Flames engulfed the home.
The mayday call went out.
Firefighter Calvin Carrier and Schroeder were trapped. Billy Ware and Pete Johnson pulled Schroeder to safety.
Schroeder was burned on more than half of his body.
He's undergone about a dozen operations including skin grafts.
“It changes the way you look at a lot of things, friends, family,” said Schroeder.
Friday night in Bryan, a burning roof collapses on firefighters.
Two lieutenants died.
Two others are in critical condition at UTMB hospital in Galveston.
“Try to comfort them a little bit and tell them the Dr's are the best in the world and the nurses are great and they're gonna take care of them,” said Schroeder
The burn doctors at UTMB asked Schroeder to share his story with the families of the Bryan firefighters.
“It may take longer than you expect but you can come back from anything,” said Schroeder.
Schroeder was back at work in 8 months. Even though he's facing another operation, Schroeder says he loves his job and can't imagine doing anything else.
He knows it may take time for the Bryan firefighters to feel the same way. But this Beaumont fireman wants to make sure they hold the same passion for their jobs when they return to work.
A fundraiser in Galveston Saturday will benefit the UTMB Burn Unit.
It's a 5-k run. It will be at Moody Gardens Saturday, February 23, 2013. It starts at 8 am. Children and adults can participate. It costs $25 for adults and $10 for children. All of the proceeds go toward assisting survivors of burn injuries and their families.
