BEAUMONT - by Beaumont Chamber of Commerce
The Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce will hold its Annual Meeting and Spindletop Award Presentation Thursday evening, October 17, in the Julie Rogers Theatre. The Spindletop Award was created in 1999 to recognize larger area businesses for outstanding corporate citizenship. Previous recipients include ExxonMobil in 1999, Entergy in 2000, CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Hospital in 2001, Conn's in 2002, Hibernia National Bank in 2003, American Valve and Hydrant in 2004, Beaumont Enterprise in 2006, Baptist Hospital in 2007, Steinhagen Oil in 2008, Market Basket in 2009, Mason Construction in 2010, AT&T in 2011, and Munro's in 2012. This year's recipient is Coburn Supply Company. Don and A. J. Maloney will accept the award on behalf of the company. The family has been part of the business community in Southeast Texas since 1934.
According to Robert Turner, Chairman of the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce, Coburn's has made significant contributions to the economic welfare of our communities. In addition, the company has set industry standards for ethical treatment of its employees. Albert Coburn founded the company in 1934. In 1936, Albert Coburn's nephew, Arthur J. Maloney joined the firm. Mr. Coburn served as Chairman until he retired in the early 1970's and Arthur Maloney assumed leadership of the company. In 1977, James Maloney became president and later chairman of the board. The third generation of Albert's "Boys," Don and A. J. Maloney, Albert's great nephews and Arthur Maloney's sons, took over leadership of the company in 2003.
Today, Coburn's is one of the largest independent wholesale distributors in the South. While the focus of the company began on plumbing, Coburn's has grown to include HVAC, municipal waterworks, electrical, appliances, cabinets and decorative hardware for kitchens and baths. The company has more than fifty locations, twenty-eight kitchen and bath showrooms, and three distribution centers in four states.
According to the founder, Albert Coburn, "The purpose of the company is to provide opportunity and security for its people." Through tenacity, foresight, creativity and innovation, the company has fulfilled its founder's vision for seventy-nine years.
