EDINBURG, Texas (AP) -- A 26-year-old South Texas mother of six is charged with injury to a child after authorities say she tried to discipline her 2-year-old son by holding his hand over a kitchen stove burner flame. Claudia Ponce was arraigned Friday and is jailed in Hidalgo County under $500,000 bond. Sheriff Lupe Trevino says it's the worst case of child abuse he's seen in his 41-year career. Court documents reviewed by the The Monitor newspaper (http://bit.ly/11uGCdX ) show Ponce contended the boy burned himself by grabbing a hot pot from the stove. Trevino says Ponce told authorities she was in the country illegally from Mexico and worked as a prostitute. The 2-year-old was taken to a burn center in Galveston. Her other children have been taken into care of child welfare authorities. 26-year-old mother of 6 charged with child abuse
