Lamar Softball falls to 6th ranked Texas, 5-0

AUSTIN, Texas – The Lamar Lady Cardinals put up a tough fight against the sixth-ranked Texas Longhorns before dropping a 5-0 decision at the Time Warner Cable Texas Classic on Friday.

Lamar (4-5) played errorless defense in the field and got a strong effort from starting pitcher Tina Schulz (1-1), but had no answer from Texas All-American pitcher Blaire Luna (6-0), who struck out 14 while allowing just one hit.

“I wish we could have hit better, but we were facing one of the best pitchers in the country,” Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. “I am very happy with the way we played defense and with the way Tina Schulz pitched. That was our best game of the year defensively.”

Texas (13-0) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Brejae Washington singled home Taylor Hoagland. The Longhorns added four two-our runs in the fourth inning to break the game open. Lamar looked to be out of the inning with no damage when shortstop Stephanie Meeuwsen’s throw to the plate appeared to have beaten Taylor Thom, who was trying to score from second on Mandy Ogle’s single. However, the umpire ruled Thom slid around the tag of Lamar catcher Beverly Corry.

Three batters later, Washington hit a bases-loaded triple to give the Longhorns a 5-0 lead.

“I thought we were out of the inning still down 1-0,” Bruder said. “That was a huge play.”

Schulz settled down after that, holding the Longhorns scoreless the rest of the way, but the lead was more than enough for Luna, whose bid for a sixth career no-hitter was spoiled by Julianne Viator’s one-out infield single in the sixth inning.

Defensively, the Lady Cardinals got sparking plays Meeuwsen at shortstop, Casey Cromwell at second base, Jenna Holland in right field and Viator in left field.

Lamar went 1-1 on the first day of the tournament, claiming a 5-2 win over Utah State earlier in the day.

“We have nothing to be ashamed of,” Bruder said. “We showed that we’re a good team. When we play like this, we can play with any team in our conference.”

Lamar continues tournament play when it meets 24th-ranked Tulsa at 1 p.m. Saturday. The semifinals are set for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday. The consolation and championship games are slated for 10 a.m. and noon Sunday. All of Lamar’s games at the tourney will be broadcast live on www.LamarCardinals.com.
