Lamar Basketball adds JUCO star forward
BEAUMONT – Looking to bolster the frontcourt and add experience to a young team, Lamar University men’s basketball coach Pat Knight announced the signing of forward Donovan Ross out of Southwest Mississippi Community College.
A 6-foot-5 forward from Ridgeland (MS) High School, Ross spent one season at Southwest after playing his freshman year at Southland Conference rival Southeastern Louisiana. As a sophomore, Ross helped the Bears to a 15-10 overall record and a second place finish in the MACJC South Division with an 8-4 mark.
“Donovan Ross is the prototypical forward that we were looking for,” said Knight. “He is skilled both inside and outside and fits exactly what we need. Height has nothing to do with it in the Southland Conference in the frontcourt, but skill and ability are what’s important.”
Ross averaged 15 points and nearly five rebounds per game for the Bears, hitting 68 percent of his field goal attempts and 73 percent of his free throws. He was named second-team all-state and was a MACJC All-Star selection for Southwest head coach Casey Carter.
“They (Lamar) were one of the youngest teams this past year and they needed a mature player with experience to add to their roster and that’s exactly what they got,” said Carter. “Donovan is as good as I have dealt with and will be a huge asset to Lamar University.”
As a true freshman at SLU, Ross shot 52.3 percent from the floor and posted averages of 2.5 points and 1.6 rebounds per game in limited minutes. Ross scored a season-high 10 points against Blue Mountain College and finished with seven points and four rebounds in a game against Lamar.
A four-year letterwinner at Ridgeland High School, Ross was rated the No. 20 prospect in the state of Mississippi as a senior after averaging 17.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Ross led the Titans to a 28-2 record as a senior after helping the team to a 23-9 mark during his junior campaign.
Ross, who posted 13.7 points per game as junior, was tabbed first-team all-district twice and was also an All-Metro and all-state selection.
