LU womens golf team wins Ladyjack Crown Classic
LUFKIN – Junior Julie Aime picked up her second career individual title by winning the Ladyjack Crown Classic on Tuesday, leading the Lamar women’s golf team to its first team victory this season.
Aime closed the 54-hole tournament with a 2-over-par 74 on the par-72, 6,092-yard Crown Colony Country Club to finish one stroke ahead of Sam Houston State’s Shelby Hardy. Aime, who won the Koasati Pines Collegiate in her Lamar debut two years ago, opened with a 78 before a second round 74 for a 226 total ( 10).
The Lady Cardinals finished with a team total of 316 Tuesday for a three-round total of 952, five strokes ahead of the Texas A&M “B” Team. Redlands Community College placed third (984), with Sam Houston State (986) and Oklahoma City University (996) rounding out the top five. Tournament host Stephen F. Austin placed 10th in the 12-team field with a total of 1,041.
Freshman Nghi Ngo finished 10th in the field of 60 golfers for her highest finish since a tie for ninth in her collegiate debut at the Chris Banister Gamecock Classic. Ngo opened with an 84 before carding rounds of 79 and 80 for a 243 total ( 27).
Redshirt sophomore Lauren Van Gerven had her best finish of the year with a tie for 11th. Van Gerven shot 83-80-81=244 ( 28) to finish one stroke behind Ngo.
Senior Sarah Nicholas and sophomore Katelyn McDougal tied for 13th at 245 ( 29). McDougal shot 78-85-82, while Nicholas opened with an 83 before back-to-back 81s.
Lamar, which last won at the 2011 Houston Baptist Intercollegiate, will next tee it up at the Inpserity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate hosted by Augusta State on March 16-18.
