BEAUMONT, Texas – Bailey Fontenot registered her second consecutive shutout, while the Lamar University women’s soccer team erupted for seven second-half goals in an 8-0 non-conference win over visiting Alcorn State on Wednesday night.
Fontenot made seven saves as she ran her scoreless streak to 217 minutes, 27 seconds. Meanwhile, the Lady Cardinals set school records for goals in the second half with seven, shots (48) and shots on goal (28).
“We struggled a bit in the first half, but we really stepped it up after halftime,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “I’m very proud of the way our team responded.”
Kimmy Albeno, Lisa Topping and Jannet Hernandez each had two goals for Lamar (4-4-1), which ran its unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1). Kristin Bos and Morgan Burden also scored for the Lady Cardinals. Jennifer Moore added two assists. Alcorn State fell to 0-5-0 with the loss.
Lamar outshot Alcorn State 48-11, and had a 28-7 advantage in shots on goal. Ashley Murray set a record for saves by a Lamar opponent with 20.
Lamar heads to California for a pair of games at the UC Riverside Tournament this weekend. The Lady Cardinals take on UC Davis on Friday before meeting the host school on Sunday.
“It will be a good test for us,” Cervantes said of the California trip. “We are going to play two very good teams.”
