Lady Cards edged by SFA in quarterfinals
KATY, Texas – The Lamar University women’s basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 73-64 loss to Stephen F. Austin in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament on Tuesday night.
Kalis Loyd poured in a game-high 27 points for the Lady Cardinals, but Lamar was eliminated in the first round for the first time since 2007, also in a loss to Stephen F. Austin.
“I was pleased with our effort,” Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. “We played hard, we just came up short.”
Lamar (16-15), which had struggled with its shooting in recent games, was a solid 22-of-47 (46.8 percent) from the field for the game, but Stephen F. Austin (22-8) shot 54 percent (27-of-50) for the contest, including a sizzling 61.9 percent (13-of-21) in the second half.
“Give Stephen F. Austin credit, they shot well,” Tidwell said. “They got good shots and made them.”
Loyd had 21 points in the second half for Lamar, as she kept Lamar in the game. It was the 11th time this season Loyd scored at least 20 points in a game.
“I felt I had to step it up,” Loyd said. “We gave it all we had.”
Brateicka Mock had 11 points, while Monique Whittaker finished with 10 points for Lamar. Tammara Marion led SFA with 16 points.
Stephen F. Austin, the No. 4 seed, advanced to meet eighth-seeded Nicholls in Thursday’s semifinals. The Colonels stunned top-seeded Central Arkansas earlier in the evening.
