Lady Cards cruise past Centenary
BEAUMONT, Texas – Kalis Loyd’s second double-double in as many games powered the Lamer Lady Cardinals to an 88-30 victory over visiting Centenary in a non-conference women’s basketball game at the Montagne Center on Thursday night.
“I’m trying to make the most of my senior year,” said Loyd, who has 20 career double-doubles. “I know this will be the end of my collegiate career, and I want it to be special.”
Loyd had 22 points and 12 rebounds in only 18 minutes for Lamar (2-1) as she boosted her career point total to 1,478, just five shy of Brittney Williams on Lamar’s all-time list. Loyd is 252 points behind Uirannah Jackson’s school-record 1,730 points.
Freshman Asia Booker had career highs of 14 points, four assists and six steals in just 13 minutes of playing time for Lamar.
“Asia is incredibly quick,” Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. “She’s working hard and she is just going to keep getting better.”
Taylor Hays added 11 points for Lamar, which extended its non-conference winning streak at the Montagne Center to 35 games.
Dionecia Warr had a double-double for Centenary (0-1), finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Lamar’s defense forced 32 Centenary turnovers, and held the Ladies to just 17.9 percent shooting (10-of-56) from the floor. The Lady Cardinals outrebounded Centenary 52-46.
“We did some things very well, but there are some things we have to work on,” Tidwell said. “We definitely have to rebound better.”
The win was Tidwell’s 108th victory, putting him one behind Pat Park’s school-record total of 109 wins. Tidwell, who is 108-56 at Lamar, goes for the record on Lamar’s two-game road trip to Mississippi at 7 p.m. Monday and Louisiana-Monroe at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
“I haven’t really thought about the record,” Tidwell said. “I’m thinking of getting back to the NCAA Tournament.
“We have two tough road games ahead of us. This will give us a good sense of where we are.”
Lamar’s next home is 7 p.m. Nov. 26 against Our Lady of the Lake.
