New chief deputy in Jefferson County

A former Jefferson County constable took on a new role recently.

Commissioners appointed Joe "Quarterback" Stevenson chief deputy constable in Precinct 1. Previously, Stevenson had served as constable of Precinct 6 but gave up that position to run for sheriff. Stevenson lost in the Democratic primary to incumbent Mitch Woods.
He will work for Precinct 1 constable Nick Saleme.

Stevenson said he applied for the chief deputy's job a few weeks ago but he began looking for other employment shortly after he lost the primary for sheriff. Commissioners had to make sure Stevenson was a certified peace officer, which he is.

Saleme, Stevenson's new boss, is not a certified peace officer and is working on his certification at Angelina College in Lufkin. Saleme has until September to complete the course.

The County Judge wants Texas lawmakers to change the rules and ensure that a constable is a certified peace officer before that person runs for office.
