Texas food banks activate to help blast victims

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- The Texas Food Bank Network has mobilized to help victims of the blast in West.

The Capitol Area Food Bank in Austin began assembling family food boxes and bottled water to ship to families in West, where an explosion at a fertilizer plant destroyed dozens of homes, an apartment building and a nursing home.

The CEO of the Texas Food Bank Network, Celia Cole said all 21 food banks that are members of the network are ready to lend a hand and will accept donations for the blast victims.

Food banks are part of the emergency response to disasters. Cole said the network was awaiting any specific needs the community or first responders might have.
